James Canto graduated cum laude from the College of New Jersey, where he studied psychology and philosophy. He then earned a J.D. at UC Hastings College of the Law, where he served as an editor for the West-Northwest Journal of Environmental Law and Policy.

James was a partner at Shimizu Canto & Fisher, PC, where he developed significant experience as a civil and business litigator. His practice as a trial and appellate attorney encompassed commercial litigation, employment litigation and administrative public agency law. Thereafter, James served as Chief Legal Counsel to the Governor of Guam, before he presided over a court of general jurisdiction as a Superior Court Judge in Guam.

James’ courtroom capabilities, gained over his fifteen years as a litigator, are enriched by his broad practice, spanning from civil litigation to criminal defense. In addition, his recent tenure as a Superior Court Judge affords him a unique insight and perspective. James’ approach to representation emphasizes a clear understanding of the client’s needs met with assiduous advice, and an incisive analysis of issues to produce strategies both effectual and mindful of cost.

After joining Cole Pedroza, James’ practice has focused upon the defense of employment, construction, payor-provider, and professional liability claims.

James is admitted to practice in California and Guam, and in the United States District Courts for the Northern, Central and Southern Districts of California and for Guam.
